Town Hall - "Community Takes on Opioids & Drug Abuse"

  • 29 Feb 2020
  • 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
  • Christ the King Lutheran Church, 10550 Georgetown Pike (near Turner Farm)

The public is invited to a special program on drug abuse and prevention being sponsored by GFCA, Great Falls Rotary and Celebrate Great Falls.

It is no surprise that opioids and other drugs present major societal problems. Less well known are that (i) opioids have been the leading cause of death in Fairfax County since 2013, (ii) they are the leading cause of death of young people between ages of 22-34, (iii) only 15% of drug users successfully kick the habit, and (iii) more than 80% of heroin users started with prescription opioids.

Among our youth, parental Involvement is key to avoiding addiction. This program will address how to identify the signs of drug usage and how to speak with children about it. The keynote speaker will be Dr. William Hazel, Virginia's former Secretary for Health & Human Resources. Panelists will include Dr. Barry Byers, member of the Fairfax County Opioid Taskforce, as well as a Fairfax County public school Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist and a representative from the County's Police Department.

Seating is limited; parking and entrance are at the rear of the church.
