Fairfax County is considering changes to its Accessory Living Unit (ALU) rules that could affect Great Falls’ semi-rural character, wells, septic systems, roads, and tree canopy. Staff proposes removing the owner-occupancy requirement, relaxing parking rules, and allowing detached ALUs by right on lots as small as 36,000 square feet (about 0.83 acre), down from the current two acres.
In a GFCA survey, 71% of participating residents favored keeping current ALU standards. GFCA has asked the Board of Supervisors to retain owner-occupancy, off-street parking, and site-specific review of detached ALUs in semi-rural districts.
Speaking at this hearing is a direct way to explain how these changes could affect your property and neighborhood. Check the County’s meeting information for speaker registration, location confirmation, and any schedule changes.
The Community Advisory Committee (CAC), sponsored by the Fairfax County Police Department, gives residents a chance to talk directly with officers from the Reston Police District, which includes Great Falls. All are welcome.
At the November meeting, Reston District officers will demonstrate two tools that safely restrict a person’s movement from a distance: an entanglement device, and a tether that fires a 7.5-foot Kevlar cord from 10 to 25 feet away. Officers will also share the month’s district news and take questions.
